GUIDE OF SCHOOL PRACTICE REFLEXIVE REPORT

Writing my school observation reflective report was not easy at first. I kept making mistakes, overthinking every paragraph, and wondering if my ideas were good enough. But with guidance, patience, and careful editing, I finally completed a strong report. That is why I created this guide  to help you avoid common mistakes students make when writing reflective reports. If you follow the advice shared here, organize your ideas well, and write from real experience, your school observation report will become easier, clearer, and more professional.

How to format your reflexive report

Whenever you are writing academic report remember to:

• Use Times New Roman as font style.
• Use 12 as font size.
• Add pages in your document.
• Use justified text.
• Cite all resources.
• Use relevant graphics.
• Use headings, and subheadings.
• Follow all provided instructions and guidelines. 
• Avoid using any colors, such as page borders.
• Avoid any form of plagiarism and cheating.

Introduction

This report covers my observation I had during school practice. It explains more about host’s school background, school structure, school practice experience, evaluation, lesson learnt, action plan and appendices.

School background

G.s Ryabega TSS is a day school that is located in Nyagatare district, Karangazi sector, Mbale cell, and Ryabega village. It was founded in 1996 currently G.s Ryabega has ECD (Early Childhood Education) level, Nursery level, Primary level, O’Level, and A’Level.

In the beginning, this school was called G.s Ryabega and it was primary school that had a few classes.  In 2009 this school was developed by adding O’Level classes to G.s Ryabega, In 2018 also this school was advanced whereby nearby people were able to obtain A₂ Diploma in different option which were added to G.s Ryabega. Those options were BCG (Biology, Chemistry and Geography) and HEG (History, Economics and Geography) as an added value in 2020 Rwandan government added technical subjects. From that day the school was no longer called G.s Ryabega despite it was called G.S Ryabega TSS.

In addition to subjects offered by this school, this school started helping young boys and ladies who did not have a chance of finalizing their subjects by giving them short courses simultaneously G.s Ryabega offers long-term courses, either short team students or long-term students were taught Auto mobile mechanics alongside Bricks lying, Building and Construction.

School structure

G.s Ryabega has three ECD (Early Childhood Education) classes and two teachers who help children to learn. The school has two nursery classes and three teachers who help one hundred and thirty two students to learn. The school also has fifteen primary classes and twenty teachers who teach one thousand two hundreds and seven primary students, the school also has eleven secondary classes (O’Level alond side A’level) and forty teachers who teach six hundred and twenty four students. We cannot forget six TVET classes that has eleven teachers who teach two hundred fifty four students.

As far as G.s Ryabega concerns delivering quality education to students the school is equipped with different buildings and raw materials that allow G.s Ryabega to reach their goals. These include two workshops which help TVET’s students to learn properly, Library which is equipped with different books, two teacher’s stuffs which help teachers to prepare their subjects and pedagogical documents properly, head master’s office and two director of study’s office, football playgrounds and volleyball grounds which help students to entertain.

The school practice experience

I was very thrilled to conduct school practice as preservice teacher because I always wondered how it looks like to attend not only as students but also as teacher, below there is my feelings and what I observed during my school practice.

First, the journey was very exciting because I shared my experience with my colleague whom we sat together.

In fact, we reached at school at 8:00 Am; of course all students had entered their class because it was lesson’s time except a few students who were picking up leaves in the school’s yard. Contrary to technical students who were busy by collecting their tools for using in their lessons. We stood in the school’s yard for a while and staring alongside experiencing school’s environment. After five minutes Director of study (DOS) approached us, he gave us warmly welcome, then he introduced himself. He let us choose what to conduct first either class observation or school observation.

Actually, we were very curious  to observe how classes look like and how teachers behave while they are delivering lessons, that’s why we immediately shook to attempt class observation before visiting other school’s premises like offices, libraries and so and so forth. Therefore, DOS divided us into groups of three student-teachers whereby each group observed it’s own class.

Our group had observed senior two and the lesson to be delivered was [.....] We firstly met [Subject teacher] who was very kind and sociable, then we entered into class. My first impression was how around sixty (60) students crowded class, so this causes students to sit huddled, my second view was on class’s chart but unfortunately it doesn’t have any chart, besides that also it was not quite tidy.

Nevertheless, teacher came to overcome all challenges. He firstly greeted the students and students responded him with huge smiles. After all, he asked what they had studied in the last periods; also students intervened by responding, “They had studied [..........”]. He then, introduced new topic that was [“........”]. He Wrote notes simultaneously students were also taking notes into their notebooks.

After giving notes, teacher started explaining what he had written. Of course, in the beginning it was not easy for him because students were not able to understand the contents, they were just hearing. In this case teacher tended to give them different challenges (quick exercises) in order to invoke enthusiasm into students, fortunately as he proceeded, students came to be stimulated and finally they understood contents.  This was proven by how they answered all class exercise they were given with enthusiasm.

At the end of lesson teacher gave us a chance to introduce ourselves. It was both interesting and challenging, because I myself, I was so eager to speak to students but since it was the first time I was somehow shivering (Afraid of many students who were staring at only me), but fortunately I adapted, then I had speech and talk with students. It was wonderful moment.

We finished class observation at 30: 30 Am, and then it was a time for short break for students and time to conduct school observation for us. We visited different premises such as leader’s offices, teacher’s stuffs, and workshops.

Evaluation

During my class observation, I evaluated teacher’s behavior, student’s emotion, class environment alongside school structure. I came to find that there were things that went well and other that did not go well.

Some went well while other did not go well, firstly let me start on the things that went well and why they went well. I appreciated how every students were interested to learn the subject, I know that many students like to neglect the subjects that will not be asked in national exams like [....]. But in this case, students were focusing on lesson.

Another thing that went well was collaboration between students and teacher, every time teacher tried to ask a question and students answered him with enthusiasm. Moreover, students asked teacher without being afraid of him.

Not only that but also teacher achieved his goal, this is another thing that went well. Teacher finished the topic of lesson and student were able to answer all question related to the topic.

The lesson went well because of different strategies used by teacher, these strategies were wearing appropriately (clothes that did not take attention of student), teacher used clear and understandable language, he spoke so loudly, he gave students different activities that stimulated students these activities prevented students from sleeping.

On another hand, there were things that did not went well. I observed students who went outside of the class without asking for permission while others went out but they did not return.

In addition to that, students were shouting in the class, this disturbed teacher from delivering his subject. Because it took long time to tell students to keep quite.

Last but not the least was unorganized sitting plan. Some students hid teacher in the corners while others were not taking the notes.

These were caused by different things such as mismanagement of class, big number of students, small classroom, and some students who behaved in bad ways.

Lesson learnt.

In this school observation, I got skills that will help me in my teaching journey.

I studied lesson of warming up students. Sometime students look tired, so I learned this strategy of warming them up in order to energize them. ......’s teacher used this strategy and I saw that students were truly energized again.

I learned another lesson of avoiding being hostile to students.  If you are hostile to student, they will be afraid of you that will result to low knowledge acquired by student because they will never ask you a question.

I also know the importance of wearing white gown. Actually, I did not know the reason why teacher wear gown but during the school observation, I know that this kind of clothes prevent students from being disturbed by stunning clothes of teachers that can be hindrance to students lessons.

In addition to that, I learned another lessons of giving quick exercises to students. These exercises stimulate students and prevent them from dozing in a class.

Lastly, I learn to use different methodology in order to impart knowledge to my students. Since I am traditionalist student-teacher I thought that traditional teaching is the best way of teaching but later I knew that it is also awesome to go together with education reform. I will apply ICT in my teaching and I will use different approach like student-centered along with teacher-centered approach.

Action plan

I gained huge things, and my action plan is the following:

I am going to increase my knowledge and skill in different things like ICT, teaching methodology and other that will help me in my teaching career.

In addition, I will search different schools where I shall volunteer in order to implement what I studied in class; therefore, this will foster my teaching skills in my future professional growth.

Conclusion of the reflective report

In briefly, school observation was quiet good and interesting because I gained experience and learned different things like class management, different ways of teaching alongside school environment in general. Therefore, I would like to appreciate UNIVERSITY OF RWANDA especially Nyagatare Campus which organized this crucial action because it is very awesome for student-teacher.
