We as The Wisdom File have thrown you back many years ago—just to uncover the untold stories of five women from the country of a thousand hills. Not to rank them. Not to compare. But to re-examine them with the benefit of distance, to see what was emphasized, minimized, or has been left unsaid.

5  Women Who Broke The Barriers

1. Nyirarumaga - The Mother of Poetry

One of the first barrier breakers whose deeds absolutely changed the game in poetry is NYIRARUMAGA. She is considered the mother of poetry in Rwanda.

According to Google Arts & Culture, Nyirarumaga was born into the Abasinga clan, and she emerged at the royal court as a young poetess. Later, she became the adoptive mother of Ruganzu II Ndoli (She was not the real mother of Ruganzu II Ndoli).

Why did she make the headlines?

Between 1510–1543, Nyirarumaga started poetry because she wanted to record and preserve the history of Rwandan kings. For the first time, she collected different poems and combined them into one poem and called it “Umunsi Ameza Imiryango Yose,” translated into English as “The Day She Became The Matriarch Of All Families.” Thanks to her, because without her, we would not have today’s poems.

2. Nyirayuhi Kanjogera - A powerful Political

Kanjogera emerged as Queen Mother (1895–1931) in Rwandan history, and her power was similar to that of the King—her actions left a trace in our history because she was accused of being very brutal to her enemies. No one can forget the “Rucunshu War,” a coup organized by this woman in 1896. Nowadays, she resembles a legendary figure remembered for her political influence.

4. Ndabaga - The legendary Warrior

One of the legends we ever had in Rwanda is “Ndabaga,” a woman of unbelievable strength and resilience. She is an icon of feminist empowerment. Generally, this woman is alleged to have existed in the 1700s.

From her childhood, she did not notice her father since he was required to serve in the King’s army. Ndabaga’s father was hopeless about retiring because retirement was granted only upon the arrival of a son to take his father’s place (There was no girl who was allowed to serve in the King’s army). Unfortunately, Ndabaga had no brothers.

Finally, NDABAGA wanted to break the barriers. She started training in jumping, using a spear, bow, and arrow. Additionally, she disguised herself as a boy. Then she headed to the place where the King allowed her to replace her father, and NDABAGA’s father was permitted to retire.
